West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination popularly known as WBJEE is conducted by West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board every year. The state-government has the sole authority to conduct the centralized test for admission to many private and governmental medical and engineering institutions located in West Bengal. The test is taken by the students appearing in Class 12 Board Examination and planning to seek admission to graduation popularly known as Bachelors’ courses.
For the academic session 2016-17, the Entrance Exam is scheduled to be held on May 17, 2016. This is for the first time in the history of WBJEE that the exam is being conducted in one single day. Till last year the exam was conducted in two days. One day was solely dedicated to Physics and Chemistry while the other day was dedicated to Mathematics and Biology. The reason behind the drastic change is to avoid the clash of exam dates with State Assembly Elections, which are expected to be held between May 1 and May 15 2016. Moreover if taken into consideration the other weekends then all of them are already booked by other state and national level exams.
If applicant wants to seek admission in any degree course in Engineering/Technology then securing a rank in the WBJEE 2016 is mandatory. However there are few self-financed institutions which might also offer admission to the candidates on the basis of merit list prepared on the basis of all India common entrance test namely JEE Main 2016.
In actual two separate tests are conducted for medical and engineering colleges, the basic difference is that the medical tests has the Biology paper while the engineering test has the Mathematics paper. Every year somewhere around 3 lakh candidates take the examination which is conducted on All India basis and increasing every year.
Though the examination is dominated by the latter yet candidates from both West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education and the central Indian School Certificate and other recognized Boards can take the test.
