KPVY: Overview and Eligibility Details

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana popularly abbreviated as KPVY is a nationwide fellowship program funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. This fellowship program was started in 1999 in order to encourage the students to portray their talents and aptitude in the areas of basic science, engineering and medicine. The fellowship is granted upto the pre-Ph.D. level. The fellowship program is administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore.


Important dates for the fellowship program: The Application for the fellowship program generally starts in the month of July and ends by August. The aptitude test is generally conducted in the month of November and the admit card begins to download in the month of October. The result of the Aptitude exam is declared in the month of December.

Eligibility

The eligible students for the fellowship program are the 1st year students of B.Sc /B.Stat/ B.Math./Int.M.Sc/M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having aptitude and skills for scientific research can apply.

There are 3 categories in which the KVPY exam will be conducted. They are as follows:

Stream SA- class 11 students:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in Class 11 science during the year of applying for the fellowship program.
  • Students must have scored a minimum of 80% aggregate in Mathematics and Science in Class 10 board exams and 70 % for SC/ST/PH.
  • Students who are ambitious to join an undergraduate program in Basic sciences (B.Sc./B.S/B.Stat/B.Math./Int.M.Sc/M.S.) for the next academic year.
  • The fellowship program will only be activated only after class 12, when the candidates enroll themselves to the Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S/B.Stat/B.Math./Int.M.Sc/M.S.) course.
  • They candidate must also secure a minimum of 60% total marks in Science subjects in class 12.


Stream SX- Class 12 students:
  • Candidates must be registered in class 12 in the year of applying.
  • Students who are ambitious in joining an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S/B.Stat/B.Math./Int.M.Sc/M.S.) in the next academic year.
  • Candidates must have scored a minimum 80% aggregate in Mathematics and science in Class 10 board exam and 70% for SC/ST/PH.
  • The candidates must have scored a minimum of 60% in Mathematics & Science Subjects in class 12 and 50 % for SC/ST/PH.


Stream SB:
  • Candidates must have enrolled themselves in the basic sciences (B.Sc./B.S/B.Stat/B.Math./Int.M.Sc/M.S.) undergraduate studies during the year of applying.
  • The candidates must have scored a minimum of 60% in Mathematics and Science in class 12 exams and 50% for SC/ST/PH.
  • The candidates must have scored a minimum of 60% in the first year final examination of B.Sc/B.S/B.Maths/B.Stat/ Int.M.Sc/M.S and 50 % for SC/ST/PH.


Non-Eligibility
  • Students holding immigration cards like People of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • Students willing to pursue undergraduate studies form distance education also cannot apply.
  • Students Pursuing B.Tech and MBBS after class 12 are also cannot apply for the scholarship.


Renewal of the scholarship

The scholarship is renewed every year according to the academic performance of the candidates. The candidates must score a minimum of 60 % in addition to participation and satisfactory performance in the summer camp in the 1st year and summer project every year.
